The F-35 lighting was the air force choice for its fifth generation fighter jet. This plane was designed for the roles of all the planes that were in the air force fleet at that time such as close air support, bombings, and air to air combat. This plane was with stealth and affordability in mind. In 2001 the air force held a competition to determine which aircraft they would award the contract worth 12.5 billion dollars and the F 35 won. But 17 years later the program is over budget and the F 35 is still have not been delivered. Many expert believed that the F 35 is not capable to perform the all the needs of the air force and now the air force still depend on older aircraft to fill the roles that the F 35 lacks.
